TLF Apparel: Classy, Cozy, Cool

I get the privilege of trying some pretty cool fitness clothes, but on a rare occasion I get a shipment of clothes that WAY surpasses my expectations – and this is one of those times. TLF Apparel (Train Like A Freak Apparel) send me some of the coolest workout clothes I’ve tried in a long time. Here are the items I picked out:

train like a freak apparel Screen Shot 2014-08-28 at 7.26.53 AM

train like a freak apparelI admit, I was worried about the sheer fabric being loose on the capris, the shorts being too short or too tight…and honestly, TLF was SO much nicer, better fitting and more comfortable than I ever thought it would be. Their quality is superb (I’m talking lululemon type quality!), the fit is absolutely perfect, the fabric is supportive and lifting (especially in the derriere) and I got an extra bonus that I didn’t expect – BLING!!

Every piece of clothing had a beautiful crystal logo. What a nice accent!! I tried capturing the shine and glimmer (on the front left of my shorts here), but couldn’t get the WOW factor I was getting in person. You just have to trust me on this one. It’s really pretty!!

Here are how the pieces looked on me! You can see how I mixed matched all the pieces, wearing different combinations of each piece together to get different looks. The “Pretty Tough” tank also has cut outs in the back which are pretty cool (and quite literally cool too when you workout!!).

Nano 4.0: The Perfect Gym Shoe

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Reebok.

REEBOK NANO4Reebok’s CrossFit Nano 4.0 shoes are not just for CrossFit enthusiasts. While the CrossFit community did help Reebok design the perfect shoe for their type of training, this shoe belongs in EVERY gym.

The 4mm heel to toe drop makes this shoe super stable, which is important when lifting weights – especially for leg day. That’s why the Nano is the shoe I wear every day I do heavy lifting, squatting or any other workout requiring balance or a good stable base.

Here is an example of my leg routine I did this week with my new Nano 4.0s!

LEG DAY

6 Sets of Prone Hamstring Curls
My weights:
2 Sets 50lbs
2 Sets 60lbs
2 Sets 70lbs

straight leg deadlifts4 Sets of Straight Leg Deadlifts
15 reps at 95lbs (Steve was wearing his new Nanos too!)

4 Sets of Seated Hamstring Curls
15 sets of 60-80lbs
(going up each set, ending with 12 reps)

Leg Press4-5 Sets of Leg Press
30 reps (Starting with 2 Plates ending with 4 Plates)

4 Sets of 1-Leg Leg Press
20 reps – Starting with 1 plate, going to 4 plates
(shedding 1 plate after 10 reps)

Leg Extension4 Sets of Leg Extension
20 reps each
If you want to go up in weight each set,
you can go down in reps 🙂
FEEL THE BURNNNNNN! 😉

My Nano4 Review:

Reebok Nano4The first day I wore my new Nano 4.0s, I did an hour on the elliptical, an hour of legs and an hour of kickboxing. I have to admit, that was a little overkill on the first day of breaking in a shoe. I got a little blister around my ankle from the extra support they put in the shoe during kickboxing, but wore them again with no problems at all. While I wouldn’t go on a long run with them personally (because my feet do better with a little more arch support and cushion), I will use them for short runs, elliptical, plyos and weight training.

The upper part of the shoe is wrapped in a protective lightweight rubber mesh that adds more durability (great for rope climbing) and activities where the upper shoe may rub against another surface. The shoe’s sole grips the ground nicely, perfect for box jumps and plyos.

Aside from the practicality of the shoe in a fitness setting, the Nanos are the only tennis shoe I find myself wearing outSIDE the gym! Steve and I both wear them with regular clothes because they just look cool. Instead of a typical looking tennis shoe that looks like it’s only made for running, Reebok Nanos look stylish enough to wear with jeans or cute shorts. They are hands-down the most versatile tennis shoe on the market.

New Fat Burner Boosts Results: ThermoHeat Product Review

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Thermo Heat.

boost buttonSometimes I feel like I need a little boost to help me reach my goals. While I don’t normally take a lot of supplements aside from protein, vitamins and creatine, I do occasionally add a fat burner to the mix to give me that edge I need when I’m starting a new diet or I’m just kinda feeling blah. So, when I got the opportunity to try ThermoHeat, I jumped right on it – because NOW was one of those times!!

Being a fitness professional, I hate when diet pills claim to help you lose weight, get ripped, get your man back and fix all your problems (because you know some companies do make crazy claims like that!), however ThermoHeat just says it like it is – no fluff, just science (Click here to see clinical studies). It says it’s boost metabolism (and it DOES), helps manage your appetite (and it DOES!) and enhances energy and alertness (and it most definitely DOES).

Natural Boost

fitness rxYou might have seen the ThermoHeat feature in Fitness RX. Basically, ThermoHeat is made up of a variety of nature’s best antioxidants, herbs, extracts and supplements. For instance, ThermoHeat has capsaicin in it, a chemical found in red chili pepper used to make paprika which reduces appetite & increases metabolic rate. Read more. While I’m no dietician or chemist, and can’t explain all the ingredients, I can tell you what this product does for me – or doesn’t do I should say!

Unlike many other thermogenics, ThermoHeat doesn’t make me jittery. Since I have heart palpitation issues, this is super important for me. Some fat burners make me feel very uneasy, but ThermoHeat is energizing without freaking me out. I can actually FEEL the warmth of the ingredients, warming me up from the inside – which is just plain cool (or hot, I should say). Increased body temperature results in more calories burned throughout the day.

Not only am I burning more calories at rest, the energy ThermoHeat gives me makes me want to burn even more calories. This is the edge I need to get my butt going on those days I’m not “feeling it”. Let’s be realistic. I would be lying if I told you to pop this pill and you’ll lose weight. While you will burn a few more calories a day and you may not be as hungry through the day, you will miss out on its benefits if you aren’t exercising and eating clean. What I love about ThermoHeat is I’m not only burning more calories, but I have the mental boost (more energy and alertness) to WANT to workout more. That’s the boost I’m talking about.

Boost Energy

BCx Boot CampI have taken ThermoHeat before a run or before a class and LOVED the added energy! I don’t suggest taking it right before exercise (especially if you haven’t eaten) simply because the warm feeling feels more intense to me when I am huffing and puffing too, but if I take it with food or an hour before exercise I feel SUPER-FANTABULOUS! Seriously, the other day, I was SOOOOO DEAD! I really, REALLY didn’t want to go to the gym, but I popped some ThermoHeat (I know, it’s not a pre-workout pill, but I figured what the hay!) and DRUG my lazy bones to the gym – and ROCKED it! I totally left the gym feeling 10 foot tall and bullet proof. ThermoHeat is energizing indeed! Just ask Steve, who accused me of taking crack on the last BCx Boot Camp show on LiveExercise! lol After taking ThermoHeat, I was quite the energizer bunny! 🙂

Reduce Appetite

Healthy-Appetite-Suppressant-300x300Lastly, ThermoHeat is also an appetite suppressant and I DEFINITELY noticed I am not near as hungry now that I’ve been taking ThermoHeat. I do NOT condone going long spans without eating (we need to boost our metabolism by eating ever 2-3 hours), however, the other day I realized it was 6:45pm and I hadn’t eaten ALL day. I completely forgot – that is NOT like me! When I finally did eat, it wasn’t from hunger, but just because I knew I NEEDED to eat.

The Verdict

Basically, my take on ThermoHeat is this. If you want a little kick in the pants and need more energy without the jitters and heart racing, you should try ThermoHeat. I’ve actually never been so good and consistent about taking supplements. With ThermoHeat, I’ve been extra good about taking it on a regular basis like a good girl! Why? Because I’m comfortable taking it and it works! (oh yeah, and I have a lost a couple pounds too!)

SO thankful I got to try this product. I definitely give it 2 thumbs up!

GYM BAG: Prissy, Practical & Pretty

Fivesse gym bag

I use my gym bag more than I do my purse! A matter of fact, I don’t even CARRY a purse during the week! A rely on my gym bag to carry all my belongings around. That is also why I don’t want to lug an ugly bulky manly bag from home to work to the gym or whereever!

So when I recently discovered Fivesse Home-Gym-Work Bag, I instantly fell in love! Maybe it was the soft pink accents. Maybe it was the cute tabs on all the pockets to help you organize your things. It could have been the pretty color combinations and patterns. When I try to pinpoint it, I simply can’t! I think it’s D: All of the above!

I got my bag with a matching garment bag for those times I need to have a nice change of clothes on a hanger instead of all bunched up in a gym bag. This was a super nice addition and perfect for any career woman or traveler. This bag would also be a fantastic carryon for those quick trips.

Reebok Z-Rated Shoes & Workout

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Reebok.

Sometimes it’s not enough to just be fast. You need to be able to move quick. If your daily run is never running in a straight line, this shoe is your kind of shoe. Check it out!

reebok zquickReebok just came out with a really cool high-traction running shoe that’s made to move quick. If you like the natural feel of a super light shoe that gives you just enough cushion without losing the feel of the road, this shoe is for you! What I love most about this shoe (besides how light it is) is definitely the traction. Traction is out of control. The outer sole is designed for maximum ground contact so your foot really grabs the ground for quick switches, turns, jumps and stops. Not only is this great for running (especially when your route includes navigating around traffic, puddles, people, dogs and uneven sidewalks) I’m super excited about using these shoes on my functional training days. These shoes are going to crush sprints, box jumps, heismansShuffle Touches, and other exercises that require more traction.

Inspired by hi-performance, Z-Rated tires, the Reebok Z Run running shoe are like sports car tires on your feet. The Z-Rated technology delivers control, traction and speed – just like my Corvette!

reebok zquickHere are the things I like most about the shoe:

  • Super Light
  • Smooth No-Sew upper
  • Low-cut for mobility
  • Roomy toe box
  • Awesome tread for killer control, traction and speed
  • Super flexible midsole

Here’s a cool video on the technology of the shoe:

5 Ways Music Can Motivate You More

This blog is sponsored by FitFluential LLC. My opinions are my own.

A professor specializing in music and exercise once said, “Music is like a legal drug for athletes”.

headphonesEveryone at our gym (Max Fitness Club) knows I take our music very seriously. I tease, calling myself “DJ Magic Bonnie” on a mission to pump up the tunes – and everyone’s heart rate. Although everyone has different musical tastes, there is a scientific reason behind the music we play in our gym.

Studies upon studies have proven that certain types of music gives gym goers an advantage. The sound level, the beat, the style – it all can make or break your workout.

If you want to PUMP up your workouts, then I suggest you PUMP up the tunes! Here are 5 tips to use music to give you a boost in the gym.

Music Motivational Tips (and my Top 5 Favorite Musical Movie Scenes)

1. Turn the music on. Turn your music on before you even put your tennis shoes on. If you are sluggish, see how you feel as soon as you turn on some good tunes while getting ready. Watch your mood change. If you can change your mood, you can change your mind. Follow DJ Special Ed on Facebook to stream or download his custom club mixes.

Best Home Stereo Scene:

2. Crank up the drive. Crank up high-energy music while you are driving to the gym. By the time you get there, you will be so energized, nothing will stop you from having a great workout! Works every time!

Best Car Stereo Scene:

3. Buy good headphones. If you don’t like the music your gym plays, or you like to run outside, buying a good pair of headphones (like Koss FitClips) is as important as buying a good pair of shoes. Not only will you have great workouts, but headphones say “I’m serious and don’t want to be interrupted”, which will increase your overall intensity.

Best Headphone Scene:

4. Search for fitness music that shows beats per minute. To give you an idea of pace, ACE (American Counsel on Exercise) suggests the following beats per minute based on sport: Walking: 137–139 bpm, Running: approx. 147–169 bpm and Cycling: approx. 135–170 bpm. The higher the beats per minute, the higher intensity – even when weight training.

Best Club Music Dance Scene:

5. Save your tunes for the gym. If you play your workout music outside of exercise, you may lose a little magic. By saving your music for your workouts, the music will stay fresh and exciting – just like your workouts should be. Here is The Sneaker Reports Top 20 Fitness Tracks.

REVIEW: Koss FitClips for Women

koss headphonesI have REALLY small ears. I know, it’s probably a surprise because nothing else on me is small. For a girl who wears a size 9 shoe and is 5’9″ tall, I NEVER can find headphones to fit me. So, when I got the change to give Koss FitClips a try, I have to admit I wasn’t really hopeful. I knew there was a possibility my stupid ears would reject them. BUT, low and behold, they locked right into my ears and did not budge for my entire workout. I didn’t adjust them once – which is UNHEARD of for me!! These bad boys are made for women, and literally fit my ears like a GLOVE.

Koss’ female designers teamed-up with Gold Medalist Dara Torres to create the world’s first headphones designed specifically for women, by women.

The Incredible Flexible Washable Reebok Skyscape

reebok skyscapeReebok Skyscape

Reebok did it again! They came out with the cutest, lightest (5 OUNCE!) , seamless, super comfy and totally machine washable (DID YOU HEAR ME???? I SAAAID MACHINE WASHABLE!!! how COOL is THAT?!) tennis shoe, perfect for daily wear! It’s call the Reebok Skyscape.

Sometimes you just want a cute minimal shoe that is cozy but doesn’t look like an athletic shoe for those days you want to be comfy but you don’t want to look like you are going for a run. If this is YOU, then you might want to try out this cool new pair of kicks.

The material is wild! It’s smooth, soft and stretchy material makes this shoe like nothing else I’ve ever put on my foot. Plus, it has a pillowy tongue with extra cushion so tight laces don’t cut off circulation or irritate the top of your foot. Basically, comfy was their focus and they nailed it. I wore it to work yesterday, knowing I was going to have to stand on my feet for several hours straight, and they didn’t let me down.

Check ’em out!

The Scoop About the Polar Loop

FitFluential LLC compensated me for this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Many of you asked me what I thought about my new Polar Loop and, as promised, here’s my review!

Polar Loop

Pretty

Let’s be honest. Some of the activity trackers are not that pretty. The Polar Loop looks nice on and, with the silver accents, looks more like a piece of jewelry than a sports band. Another thing I like about the Polar Loop is that it tells time. I mean, if you are going to wear something in place of your watch, it might as well tell time too right? That is something my last activity tracker didn’t offer, and I really enjoy that simple feature.

Polar Loop Simple

If you are looking for a ton of options and fancy features, this isn’t your band. This activity tractor is super simple and focuses on covering the basics. The band syncs easily with the iPhone via bluetooth, which I love. No special adaptors or cables needed to see your updated activity.

Once you have synced your band with your Polar Loop app, you can view just one screen that shows everything you need to see at one glance.

The circular graphic displays activity from light to dark blue:

WHITE: Sitting or passive behavior
GREY: Medium activity – walking or moderate activity
LIGHT BLUE: Resting or lying down
BLUE: Low activity, standing work or light choirs
DARK BLUE: High activity, jogging, running and intense activity.

polar loopClick on the circle and it will display your activity in real time so you can see your movement and rest patterns. That’s my favorite screen, because it doesn’t look as bad as allllll that white and light grey! ha! BUT, it’s good to see the reality of how inactive even an active person like me is!

Polar loop

polar loop

The Polar Loop gives you goals and displays where you are for the day. You can see here, above (at the top of the screen), that I was 254% of my goal. If you scroll down on this same screen, you will continue to see more information including:

 Calories Burned
 Steps Taken
 Active time
 Sleep Time

The Polar Loop shows I received one inactivity alert to remind me to get moving! It also has some motivational words about your activity to make you feel like a super star! …AND, if you need some help getting moving, you can click on the “i” (information) button and it will display ways to reach your goal.

The most exciting thing to me about the Polar Loop is that it’s the only activity band that connects with a heart rate monitor – so this bracelet will track calories burned and activity even more accurately than any other exercise band. This is something I’m still working on how to learn, and use.

Polar LoopI wore it on our LiveXFit show yesterday and I traced my calories burned in one of Steve’s kickboxing classes – where it showed I burned over 500 calories. I LOVE knowing how many calories I’m burning when I exercise!! It makes me love those darn burpees a little bit more! I’ll share more as I learn it. I still have a lot of playing to do!!

Check out this cool video showing all the features!

Technical features:

  • Waterproof for swimming
  • Custom-fit bracelet
  • Time of day
  • Display texts in English
  • Data transfer via custom USB cable or Bluetooth Smart via Polar Flow mobile app
  • Memory capacity 12 days activity data
  • Rechargeable battery with 5 days continuous use
  • Web service compatibility with Mac OS X 10.6, OS X 10.7, OS X 10.8, or later, and PC Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, or later
  • Mobile app compatibility with iOS 6 (iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S, iPod touch) or later

Bottom line, if you really love fitness and tracking calories burned, get the Polar Loop, as well as the chest strap heart rate monitor, for the most accurate calorie and activity tracking around! I’ll share more as I learn more!! Now, I better get ACTIVE!!

Reebok Nano 3.0 Product Review: 5 Things I Love

Nano 3.0People have been asking me how I like my new Reebok Nano 3.0s. Before I answer, I must tell you how much I love my Nano 2.0s already. I have to admit, I was a little bummed when I heard they had changed. I loved my old ones so much, I was worried I wouldn’t like these as much. However, like with anything else Reebok gets their hands on, they’ve made improvements.

It’s obvious they asked the pros what they’d like to see different, and better, and they did it. And, what I already liked, they kept. Here’s the lowdown…

5 Things I Love About the Nano 3.0.

Nano. 3.01. Wider toebox. This allows your toes to spread out for great balance. The Nano 2.0 already had a nice roomy toebox, but this is even roomier for even more stability.

2. 4 mm heel drop. This keeps your foot flat on the ground, great for heavy lifts when your heel should not be raised, but nice, flat and stable on the floor for maximum power production.

3. More durable. The rubberized cage that completely surrounds the shoe makes this shoe a lot more durable than the 3.0, as well as offers more support. They also used a stronger polyester on the outside of the shoe, called Rope Pro, specifically designed to be more durable during rope climbing.

nano 3.04.  Non-slip grip sole. This is great for all the crazy stuff we do in boot camp, or any other functional training program, like box jumps, mountain climbers, burpees, etc. It’s dependable gripping sole will help prevent you from falling on your face – cause, that’s no fun! 😉

5. Flexible sole for functional moves. Shoes that offer too much support can often be too stiff. As a result, they slip off the back of the heels when doing exercises like mountain climbers, squat thrusts, etc. This shoe has a nice easy bend at the toe box so your shoe and foot move together.

How do you know if Nanos are right for you?

  • Do you do heavy lifts, like dead lifts, squats, clean & jerk, split jerks, kettlebell snatches, high pulls, swings, etc?
  • Do you do sprints or short bursts of runs in your training?
  • Do you do a lot of plyometrics – like double unders, burpees, mountain climbers, tuck jumps, etc
  • Do you jump on tires, boxes, steps or other objects?
  • Do you climb rope or obstacles?
  • Do you like a minimalist shoe with a flat sole?
  • Are you tough on your shoes, where you wear holes in the fabric, side walls or toe?

If you are a marathon runner, these shoes are not for you. If you lift weights using only machines, it probably won’t matter what you wear. However, if you do any of the above training, these are a great cross-training shoe that allows your training to be versatile without having to change shoes for different exercises.

Here are what some CrossFit athletes had to say about the new Nano 3.0s.
