Fitness Motivation: It’s Not Too Late to Revive Your Life

So many people convince themselves it’s too late to fix their body. They see is a broken down body that doesn’t run like it used to, and fear they are too tired and out of shape to fix it. That is such a lie. It’s never too late. If you are still breathing, there’s still time to improve the life you have before you.

Like author, Barbara Johnson, said “You can’t turn back the clock, but you can wind it up again”. Boy is that true! Fitness literally winds you back up. It reenergizes you and strengthens you so you run stronger and better. Just like a clock, your ticker (your heart) will even beat better, and be more reliable.

We may not be able to erase all life’s wrinkles without medical treatments to look younger, but we can wind our body back up with fitness to make us FEEL younger.

Whether you are 40 or 80, you can be a better 40 or 80 year old. You can wind yourself back up again!

Some people may be convinced a program, like boot camp, would be too intense, but she didn’t let her age, doubts or fears stand in her way of success. Tough is Required

Tough Makes Tougher

 

You say “It’s too hard”, “it’s too heavy” or “I can’t”, but OF COURSE it’s too hard, too heavy and you feel like you can’t do it. If it were easy, light and you could do it, it wouldn’t challenge your body the way it needs to be challenged to get strong enough to push HARDER, lift HEAVIER and actually DO IT. Tough is a requirement.

Monday Motivation: No Legs, No Problem

I’ve heard every excuse in the book:

“I have bad knees.” 
“My feet hurt”
“I have weak muscles”
“I suffer from sciatica”
“I have a bad case of Plantar Fasciitis”
“I have arthritis”
” I am too old”
“My body hurts”

Most people think any one of those things are a pretty good excuse to get out of “P.E. Class”, but what if you had ALL those problems? Gail Griesemer does. Born with Spina Bifida, Gail has damaged nerves and muscles that prevent her from walking, much less exercising – or so you would think.

If you come to Max Fitness on a regular basis, you’ve probably seen her rolling her wheel chair down the side walk and back, doing laps for her trainer, Jack Harris. She works out on weights to strengthen her upper body and, despite bad hips, ankles that are surgically fused together, and no feeling in her feet, she even does walking exercises to strengthen her legs. If that wasn’t impressive enough, she also takes yoga. Yep, she attends yoga classes regularly to keep her body flexible and her mind stress-free.

Gail refuses to roll over and let her body tell her what she can and cannot do. There is no one to motivate her. No one to pick her up and take her to the gym. There is no one making her do this. Gail decided she HAS to do this to be as physically fit as she possibly can. If she wants the best life possible, she knows this is what she has to do – and it’s likely, she’s not much different from you.

Whether you battle fat or bad joints, you have your own set of issues. We all do – AND, there is no one that will make you do this. YOU have to do it. YOU have to decide you are worth it. YOU have to keep showing up day after day – not because you FEEL like it, but because it’s what you MUST do to have the BEST LIFE you can have. No one can do it for you. Maybe you’ve been making excuses for a long time to help release yourself, and let yourself off the hook. Well, I’m putting you back on the hook. I’m not letting you believe that it’s too late, you’re too fat or too out of shape. I’m not going to let you say you don’t have time or can’t afford it. All your excuses are lame in comparison to people like Gail.

If you’ve been a victim of a self-inflicted pity party, STOP! Quit feeling sorry for yourself, and get off your butt and get to the gym! Remember Gail, and remember if she can do it, you can too.

Beware of Becoming Obsessed with Perfection

In the world of fitness, it’s easy to compare your speed, skill, stamina, strength, and physique to others. Even if you are 50lbs lighter than you were, you’ll still manage to find more things to complain about, and more things to fix, despite your victory.

It’s like buying, what my family calls, a “fixerupper” – a home that needs a lot of work. At first, you see the major stuff that needs to be fixed. You’ll even convince yourself that the house will be perfect if you can just fix those few major things. But, after you fix the obvious, you’ll begin to uncover a million other things that aren’t necessarily broken, but that could be better.

If you’re not careful, your innocent excitement will turn into obsession. While you are in the remodeling process, you’ll read more books, watch more home improvement shows, and make more mental notes on your friends and neighbors’ homes too – comparing your house to the BEST features from all the BEST houses. Before you know it, you’ve spent 10 years of your life fixating on all its imperfections, constantly comparing your house to other houses, and never really enjoying your home. Sound familiar?

We tend to treat our body the same way. At first we are consumed with the obvious, like our weight. Then we begin to pick our body apart, reading every fitness magazine, gazing at every “perfect” body, and always comparing ourself to the next guy – to the point we never just enjoy our new better “home”.

Once you give yourself a little break, you can enjoy making small improvements without obsessing over perfection. For some, that means looking a little better. For others, it means feeling a little better. Or, if you’re like me, being a little better just means fighting age, and the natural deterioration our body goes through when we neglect it – being a little better than than the average 41 year old sitting on the couch and eating pizza. Because it’s not like I can trade this model in on a new perfect one. So “better” will have to do.  🙂
