When you go into a marriage, you each come with a lot of baggage – baggage you might not even know you had. At first, you are so in love you don’t notice the weight you each carry right away. Over time, the burden of carrying the extra junk begins to show – and new junk gets piled on too! In many ways, marriage is like weight loss. It requires a permanent commitment to succeed, and it takes a lot of work, discipline, balance, self-control and constant effort if you want to maintain it.
Today we celebrate 20 years of marriage! This above photo was of Steve and I at a company beach party in the early part of our marriage (in the 90’s – that explains the high waisted swim suit I had on! OMG!). The party was put on by Steve’s favorite boss of all-time, Tom Kane of the Center for Orthopedic Sports & Physical Therapy in Tallahassee, FL. We thought we were so fit. haha! Boy did we have a lot to learn!
Sure, we worked out. We even did occasional cardio! lol However, we were merely in the honeymoon stage of both our marriage – and our fitness. The newness was fun and exciting. We were beginning to do a lot right, but we were still doing a LOT wrong.
Over the years, we not only learned that marriage was going to be harder than we thought, and so was staying fit and healthy! It’s taken years to learn how to eat healthier and work out better (more effectively and more efficiently). We’ve learned how to maintain a healthier weight by managing calories and practicing self-discipline. Instead of yo-yoing up and down, binging (cheating) and then crash dieting, now we eat pretty healthy all the time with small cheats here and there – which is a healthier and happier way to live. We rely less on exercise to erase our food “sins” and more on self-control and keeping our diet and lifestyle in balance so we don’t have to spend 2 hours a day in the gym.
I encourage you to always work to improve. Alway seek knowledge. Always work at it! And always remember you are learning every single day – even in your failures. And, most importantly, NEVER GIVE UP. All the hard work, all the failures, all the mistakes, all the struggles are WORTH IT as LONG AS YOU stick to the commitment you first made. If you quit, all the work was for nothing.
I’m so thankful Steve and I have stuck it out, even when the hard work didn’t seem to work right away (like doing a new fitness program…and you wonder when it will EVER pay off!). Sound familiar? I am telling you! There were days we both were nearly convinced we couldn’t succeed no matter how hard we tried. Now we laugh at that thought! And the same goes for you – in whatever you are striving for. Don’t give up when things are tough…chances are, victory is JUST around the corner!!!
Keep your eye on the prize! Don’t look back and keep pressing on. The reward is greater than you could EVER imagine!!!! Whether it’s weight loss or your marriage. The reward is worth the work!

Today is the last day of 2013. Many of you have big plans for tonight. You plan to eat well (and I don’t mean healthy, I mean healthy portions) and you might even have a bottle of champaign ready to be popped at midnight. In many ways, it’s like the last day of being single, or like a bachelor or bachelorette party – the last hurrah before tying the knot. Today is your last day to not worry about calories and to “play” before you put on the big fitness ball and chain.
While dieting and working out may not seem all that fun, it has serious rewards. The problem is, most people don’t treat the fitness lifestyle like a commitment. They treat it more like a date, only to be tossed aside when it no longer is fun or convenient.
2014: THE TIME TO MAKE A COMMITMENT
Listen, if you want to have a healthy body, you need to make fitness a commitment. It should be something you do on a regular basis whether you feel like it or not. Whether you can afford the type of workout you want or not. Whether you are going through good times or going through bad times. And, whether you are getting out of it what you feel you deserve. Fitness, like marriage, is a decision. You may not always love it, you may not always feel like sticking with it, and it may even let you down at times. However, if you do stick it out, fitness always pays off.
This year, decide to commit to fitness in a different way. This means you have to change your mindset. Your New Year’s Resolutions should be less about hopes and wishes and more about decisions and actions. It should be less about a desired dress size or weight, and more about your commitment to do what is best and healthy for your life. Fitness is a lifestyle, and the smaller dress size is the reward.
Make a list of how you plan to commit to your new healthy lifestyle in 2014 – for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, and in sickness and health (yes, there are still plenty of things you can do even if you are sick or have an injury) . Remember, you can’t divorce yourself, so you might as well commit to treating your body right – because you are stuck with it until “death do us part”! 🙂

If only fitness was that easy to get. If only we could wait on a better time to get it, where it doesn’t cost so much. Don’t hold your breath, because fitness doesn’t come cheap – and it will never go on sale. Of matter of fact, the longer you wait, the more you’ll have to pay for it. Since most people do want it, people end up putting fitness on “layaway”.
If you are window shopping and you see something you like, you may be tempted to put it on layaway. You’ll take the item to the service desk and make a small payment on it so they don’t sell it to someone else. However, if you don’t come back to finish paying on it, they will put it back on the shelf and someone else will end up taking it home. Why? Because the person who commits 100%, and pays for it in full, is the one who ultimately gets to take it home.
Layaway Fitness, Layaway Results
You may want to wear a new body, but you’ll never own it unless you pay for it. The cost is hard work and dedication with your diet. It is worth MORE than every penny of effort – however, many people only make a small deposit on it and never finish paying it off. As a result, only the people who fully commit to getting what they want actually walk around with the body others hoped to eventually get.
Like with material things, some people can afford to pay cash for big ticket items. For others, it may take a few months to pay it off. The same goes for fitness. Some people will get their reward faster because they can “afford it”, and it just comes a little easier for them. For others, it may longer to pay off. But, every day you go to the gym you are making a payment on the new body you WILL take home eventually, as long as you don’t stop making “payments”. Either way, it’s obtainable by all – for those who really, really want it.
We all have things in life we want – material things, love, wisdom, accomplishments, a good name. However, you will never get the full result (or keep it) if you don’t commit 100%. To prove this theory, ask your spouse if they don’t mind giving you a hall pass on the weekends. I’m pretty sure that they expect you to be committed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Maybe you’ve made a downpayment on your health. You might have joined a gym, but don’t go as often as you should. Maybe you diet sporadically, but aren’t consistent as you know you need to be. Maybe you have tried getting fit – but in reality, even then, you didn’t give it your all.
Maybe today is the day you decide to commit 100% to making the changes you know you need.
