Q&A: Fat Burners, Diet Pills & Thermogenics

diet pills So many people don’t understand what Fat Burners really do. Are they diet pills? Do they work? How do they make you feel? Will it help you lose weight? How fast should you see results? When is it best to take them? These are many of the questions we get about Thermogenics (AKA Fat Burners).

First, watch this quick video, where Steve explains what thermogenics actually are – and what they do.

Now, to answer some of those questions.

Are they diet pills?

diet pillsDiet pills do different things. Many prescription pills curb your appetitive. There is another prescription that blocks fat from being absorbed and stored. Old school prescription pills often contained amphetamines which now is typically prescribed as dextroamphetamine, or the inactive prodruglisdexamfetamine. Then you have the old school fat burners, which contained Ephedra, in combination with aspirin and caffeine. Since Ephedra is no longer legal in the United States, supplement companies have been working hard to come up with a safer way to burn fat. So, in my opinion, I would not classify a thermogenic as a diet pill. While the fat burner we take, ThermoHeat for example, does have an appetite suppressant in it, it’s main job its to increase your body temperature to burn more calories throughout the day.

Do they work?

Diet-weight-loss-Yes, but not if you are depending on a fat burner alone. Fat burners can give you the edge you need to be more apt to move, exercise and stay active. It will increase calorie burn, but you have to understand how easy it is to erase those calories with poor food choices. Let’s say, for example sake, you burn 200 extra calories a day when on a fat burner. You could erase those calories easily with a big gulp coke or an extra snack. For this reason, fat burners work best when you combine it with exercise and diet.

How do they make you feel?

crazyhairSome fat burners make you feel like you’ve had 10 cups of coffee. The old school fat burners that had ephedra in it really freaked people out. However, I think most fat burners today are more mild feeling in comparison to the Ephedra, caffeine and aspirin variations. People may complain about feeling anxious and jittery on some fat burners. Since I have heart palpitations, I have to watch out for fat burners that get my heart racing. ThermoHeat doesn’t make me feel that way at all. It makes me feel focused and more apt to stay moving, but I don’t feel like I’m on speed or anything. Basically, the answer to this question is “it depends”. Every fat burner is different.

weight lossWill it help you lose weight?

Yes. If you are burning more calories than you are consuming, you will lose weight. The key to success is to make the most of the fat-burning opportunity. Exercise when you are feeling energized and avoid replacing calories with poor food choices. However, if you aren’t going to track calories or even try to be in a caloric deficit, you probably will not get the results you want.

How fast should you see results?

How fast you get results depends on how dedicated you are to your weight loss goals. First, you need to know that you should feel results right away. You should feel more energized and more focused pretty quickly. This should help you WANT to workout and stay more active, which can often be an issue for many people. People lack the motivation or the energy to workout. BUT, if you don’t workout and you refuse to be more active, you aren’t going to get all the goody out of your fat burner. If you are taking ThermoHeat, you should also not feel as hungry, which can help with controlling your appetite. So, in many ways, you should be getting results almost immediately. However, if you are talking about seeing results on the scale, that’s a different story. The results you get are dependent on consistency and accuracy. Staying consistent with eating low-calorie foods and exercising will get you faster results. Accurately tracking calories burned and calories consumed will help you get the best results. But if you plan on just guessing your way through the day, I can only guess your results (and I would guess they won’t be what you want).

When is it best to take them?

White Competition Bikini Personally, I like taking Fat Burners to help give me an edge when I’m taking my training or dieting up a notch. I only take them for a season, and then I go off for a while. For example, I took ThermoHeat to help me prepare for my competition. It REALLY helped me get my 3 workouts in a day (2 cardios and 1 weight training workout) when I was extra low on calories. I honestly don’t think I would have had the oomph to do it without it. It’s also great for people who are starting a workout and diet plan. It can give people the mental and physical boost they need to get in a routine. It also will help increase energy when people would typically experience a loss of energy from just starting a diet and exercise program.

ThermoHeatBefore I close, let me be super clear. If you want to lose weight, the first thing you need to focus on is diet. You need to learn to track calories and stick to a caloric budget (I like using the LoseIt app for this). Second, you need to get in a good exercise routine. It doesn’t have to be an intense workout everyday, but a consistent workout routine you can stick to. Third, once you are willing to commit to eating right and exercising, THEN you can add supplements to the equation, like protein, creatine, fat burners, etc. Sadly, people often do the exact opposite, because making a protein shake or popping a pill is a lot easier than committing to a lifestyle change. You should never rely on supplements – they are only to SUPPLEMENT what you are missing and enhance what you are already doing. They are the icing on the low-cal cake! As long as you understand that, you are golden. Are they effective? Heck yeah, when they are used correctly! As long as you realize there is no protein shake or fat burner alone that will get you ripped like you see in the ads. Will they help? Absolutely! But, if you want results, you will be required to work for it. But I do promise you it will be SO worth it!!!

Orange: Fit Color for October

TLF ApparelIf you are looking for some new unique fitness wear that is high quality and a great flattering cut, you need to check out TLF Apparel. I just discovered them a couple of months ago and I am so impressed with their clothing line.

MY OUTFIT FOR OCTOBER

My latest outfit, in “Hot Coral” (which is a cool orange color), is a winner! I love the cut of the bra top, which is high enough in front that is shows up under most tank tops. This makes it easy and fun to layer clothing to add color and style to any outfit – even my work uniform top (which is my Max tank top here).

THE COLOR

Hot Coral is the name of this color. It’s not pumpkin orange, but it’s definitely orange (and orangier than it appears in this pic). It’s a cool orange with a hint of coral in it. However, it seems to match all my clothes that have electric orange or coral accents. The vibrant color really brightenes up other solids, like black, grey and white. “Hot coral” is great for fall, but bright enough to go all year long. LOVE IT!

BETTER WITH BLING

Both pieces have a really pretty blinged logo which adds a bit of class and “prettiness” to each pice.

TLF Apparel

STYLE

If you like ORANGE, then here are some TLF pieces I loved…

Casual comfy layer that keeps you cool with this “air-conditioning back”. Love this!

25272533

This first grey tank with the orange logo is the tank I got to layer over my orange outfit. It’s a great fit and has a little “dressier” feel than the above tank. This is a great outfit for people who like to look sharp (perfect for trainers and fitness professionals). The Infi-Dry fabric keeps you from looking like a wet rat after a hard workout – and dries fast too.

Nano 4.0: The Perfect Gym Shoe

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Reebok.

REEBOK NANO4Reebok’s CrossFit Nano 4.0 shoes are not just for CrossFit enthusiasts. While the CrossFit community did help Reebok design the perfect shoe for their type of training, this shoe belongs in EVERY gym.

The 4mm heel to toe drop makes this shoe super stable, which is important when lifting weights – especially for leg day. That’s why the Nano is the shoe I wear every day I do heavy lifting, squatting or any other workout requiring balance or a good stable base.

Here is an example of my leg routine I did this week with my new Nano 4.0s!

LEG DAY

6 Sets of Prone Hamstring Curls
My weights:
2 Sets 50lbs
2 Sets 60lbs
2 Sets 70lbs

straight leg deadlifts4 Sets of Straight Leg Deadlifts
15 reps at 95lbs (Steve was wearing his new Nanos too!)

4 Sets of Seated Hamstring Curls
15 sets of 60-80lbs
(going up each set, ending with 12 reps)

Leg Press4-5 Sets of Leg Press
30 reps (Starting with 2 Plates ending with 4 Plates)

4 Sets of 1-Leg Leg Press
20 reps – Starting with 1 plate, going to 4 plates
(shedding 1 plate after 10 reps)

Leg Extension4 Sets of Leg Extension
20 reps each
If you want to go up in weight each set,
you can go down in reps 🙂
FEEL THE BURNNNNNN! 😉

My Nano4 Review:

Reebok Nano4The first day I wore my new Nano 4.0s, I did an hour on the elliptical, an hour of legs and an hour of kickboxing. I have to admit, that was a little overkill on the first day of breaking in a shoe. I got a little blister around my ankle from the extra support they put in the shoe during kickboxing, but wore them again with no problems at all. While I wouldn’t go on a long run with them personally (because my feet do better with a little more arch support and cushion), I will use them for short runs, elliptical, plyos and weight training.

The upper part of the shoe is wrapped in a protective lightweight rubber mesh that adds more durability (great for rope climbing) and activities where the upper shoe may rub against another surface. The shoe’s sole grips the ground nicely, perfect for box jumps and plyos.

Aside from the practicality of the shoe in a fitness setting, the Nanos are the only tennis shoe I find myself wearing outSIDE the gym! Steve and I both wear them with regular clothes because they just look cool. Instead of a typical looking tennis shoe that looks like it’s only made for running, Reebok Nanos look stylish enough to wear with jeans or cute shorts. They are hands-down the most versatile tennis shoe on the market.

Pain-Free Running: Do You Need Orthotics?

The Shoe Lady I recently visited my friend, Audree “The Shoe Lady”, who is a Certified Pedorthist located at Bob’s Shoe Repair on 8th Street in Vero Beach, to get some guidance with orthotics. My left ankle had been acting up again. Last year I had to stop cardio altogether and go to rehab – and I was NOT going to let that happen again!

She suggested I need more arch support and fit me for some orthotics to go in my running shoes – and I also got 2 new pair of Spira running shoes!! (See my product review on Spira Footwear)

Spira FootwearThe first thing I noticed was that I could really feel the orthotic’s arch in my left shoe much more than the right. This told me that I definitely had a lower (collapsing) arch in that foot. I had no idea I needed arch support! My arches weren’t hurting – my ankle was. She explained how they are connected and said that was very common.

Later that day I went to Posture Perfect and had my posture analyzed. Low and behold, not only did I have arch issues, my center of gravity was leaning over my left foot. Dr. Wetter took photos, I could clearly see the right side of my body crossing over the “plum line” (the reference to where my center was supposed to be) over to my left side. How interesting was this?! It was an “a-ha” moment for me, and it all made perfect sense. No wonder I needed arch support on my left foot, it was bearing all my weight!

OrthoheelAfter nearly 3 weeks of running with my new arch support, not only am I not having ankle pain, I am running MORE! Since I’m trying to lean out, I needed to run more than usual. I did a total of 9 cardios last week, between running, kickboxing and LiveExercise classes, and my ankle is pain-free. The orthotics fit every pair of shoe I have so I can use them in my new Spiras or switch them out as needed.

After great success, I interviewed Audree to learn more so I could pass along more information on orthotics because I realize I’m probably not the only one who needs her help!!

1. What is the most common foot problem you see?
Plantar Fasciitis for sure…

2. How is it fixed?
Immediate action includes anti inflammatories, ice, stretching (I recommend tracing the alphabet with your foot). A more long term solution would be a foot orthotic and a good supportive shoe. A foot orthotic will help to diffuse the weight bearing of the foot, thereby taking pressure off the heel and supporting the mid-foot and arch.

3. What are symptoms of a possible shoe issue.
Pain. If you suddenly develop some sort of foot pain or knee pain, it can be an indicator your shoe is not the right shoe for the activity you’re doing, or it is worn out (for example, cushion, heel wear or uneven heel wear).

4. What do most people not know about insoles?
That an insole is just that, a piece of foam that can replace the insole of the shoe. What most people need is arch support. A foot orthotic, either off-the-shelf or custom, can disperse the weight bearing of the entire foot.

5. How do you know if an insole is right for you?
In most cases you may need a professional opinion to begin with, but you always want something with arch support. (Tip: To test the quality of the insole, do this test: Lay the “insole” on a flat surface and push down on the arch. It should not flatten out.) Additionally, some people need more cushion while others need something more aggressive and firmer.

6. What is the price range for good insoles?
$35-$75 for a decent off-the-shelf orthotic.

7. What is the best insole on the market & what does it cost?
Believe it or not, the best orthotic I carry is one of my least expensive by Vionic. It has good arch support as well as a good cushion.

8. What is one thing you wish you could tell all your customers?
Arch support, arch support, arch support. The human foot was not designed to walk on concrete, which is what we do everyday.

Running with my dogMarley and I thank you Audree for taking care of my feet!! We’ve had a blast on our morning runs together – and we wouldn’t have been able to run every morning without you and your orthotic insoles!!!

THANK YOU!!

Refreshing Protein Drinks for Hot Days

isopure protein drinkIf you are like me, sometimes the thought of another frothy thick milky protein shake on a hot day is enough to make you want to gag. When you have a protein shake every day, they can get old. Of course, this isn’t always the case with everyone. I don’t think my husband EVER gets tired of them! However, I am very different. I don’t like super sweet drinks and I don’t crave sweets so I struggle to get a chocolatey milky shake down sometimes. So, when IsoPure asked if I would like to try some of their crystal clear protein drinks, I jumped on the opportunity!

Gulp Gulp!

isopure drinksThe first drink I tried was their Cocotein. OMG! That’s all I can say. OOOO MMMMM GGGGGGG! My eyes must have popped out of my head when I took my first taste. I had to read the label again to make sure I was seriously getting 20gms of protein in such a refreshing awesome tasting cold beverage!! I was FREAKING out!!! I was sad I only had one bottle. I chugged down a few sips after a hot run, enjoying every drop. Being the wonderful wife I am (lol), I saved a little for Steve so he could taste it too because that’s what you do when you taste something amazing. He doesn’t even like coconut water and it wowed him too!! So I am hooked! Now I have to do a GNC run and stock up!

Where to buy them:

GNC
Vitamin Shoppe
Bodybuilding.com
Amazon
Lucky Vitamin

Why would you want to get IsoPure (besides because it tastes ridiculously good)?

  1. Lactose Free – First, for all those lactose intolerant peeps, IsoPure Drinks are Lactose Free!
  2. Low-Carb/Low Fat – Most of their drinks are super low-carb and have little to no fat.
  3. Extra Oomph – IsoPure has potassium, sodium and to help replace electrolytes from sweating.  Their IsoPure Teas have caffeine, BCAAs and antioxidants too (SO COOL!)!
  4. Refreshing & Thirst-Quenching – The crystal clear drink is super refreshing, tasty and easy on the tummy!
  5. Yummy! – Out of all the flavors I tried, I have to say the Cocotein is definitely my favorite.

There you have it! There’s my review on IsoPure drinks! Now, go out and grab a bottle and see for yourself!! And don’t you leave without trying the Cocotein – and then tell me what you think!!!! YUMMMMMMM!!

New Fat Burner Boosts Results: ThermoHeat Product Review

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Thermo Heat.

boost buttonSometimes I feel like I need a little boost to help me reach my goals. While I don’t normally take a lot of supplements aside from protein, vitamins and creatine, I do occasionally add a fat burner to the mix to give me that edge I need when I’m starting a new diet or I’m just kinda feeling blah. So, when I got the opportunity to try ThermoHeat, I jumped right on it – because NOW was one of those times!!

Being a fitness professional, I hate when diet pills claim to help you lose weight, get ripped, get your man back and fix all your problems (because you know some companies do make crazy claims like that!), however ThermoHeat just says it like it is – no fluff, just science (Click here to see clinical studies). It says it’s boost metabolism (and it DOES), helps manage your appetite (and it DOES!) and enhances energy and alertness (and it most definitely DOES).

Natural Boost

fitness rxYou might have seen the ThermoHeat feature in Fitness RX. Basically, ThermoHeat is made up of a variety of nature’s best antioxidants, herbs, extracts and supplements. For instance, ThermoHeat has capsaicin in it, a chemical found in red chili pepper used to make paprika which reduces appetite & increases metabolic rate. Read more. While I’m no dietician or chemist, and can’t explain all the ingredients, I can tell you what this product does for me – or doesn’t do I should say!

Unlike many other thermogenics, ThermoHeat doesn’t make me jittery. Since I have heart palpitation issues, this is super important for me. Some fat burners make me feel very uneasy, but ThermoHeat is energizing without freaking me out. I can actually FEEL the warmth of the ingredients, warming me up from the inside – which is just plain cool (or hot, I should say). Increased body temperature results in more calories burned throughout the day.

Not only am I burning more calories at rest, the energy ThermoHeat gives me makes me want to burn even more calories. This is the edge I need to get my butt going on those days I’m not “feeling it”. Let’s be realistic. I would be lying if I told you to pop this pill and you’ll lose weight. While you will burn a few more calories a day and you may not be as hungry through the day, you will miss out on its benefits if you aren’t exercising and eating clean. What I love about ThermoHeat is I’m not only burning more calories, but I have the mental boost (more energy and alertness) to WANT to workout more. That’s the boost I’m talking about.

Boost Energy

BCx Boot CampI have taken ThermoHeat before a run or before a class and LOVED the added energy! I don’t suggest taking it right before exercise (especially if you haven’t eaten) simply because the warm feeling feels more intense to me when I am huffing and puffing too, but if I take it with food or an hour before exercise I feel SUPER-FANTABULOUS! Seriously, the other day, I was SOOOOO DEAD! I really, REALLY didn’t want to go to the gym, but I popped some ThermoHeat (I know, it’s not a pre-workout pill, but I figured what the hay!) and DRUG my lazy bones to the gym – and ROCKED it! I totally left the gym feeling 10 foot tall and bullet proof. ThermoHeat is energizing indeed! Just ask Steve, who accused me of taking crack on the last BCx Boot Camp show on LiveExercise! lol After taking ThermoHeat, I was quite the energizer bunny! 🙂

Reduce Appetite

Healthy-Appetite-Suppressant-300x300Lastly, ThermoHeat is also an appetite suppressant and I DEFINITELY noticed I am not near as hungry now that I’ve been taking ThermoHeat. I do NOT condone going long spans without eating (we need to boost our metabolism by eating ever 2-3 hours), however, the other day I realized it was 6:45pm and I hadn’t eaten ALL day. I completely forgot – that is NOT like me! When I finally did eat, it wasn’t from hunger, but just because I knew I NEEDED to eat.

The Verdict

Basically, my take on ThermoHeat is this. If you want a little kick in the pants and need more energy without the jitters and heart racing, you should try ThermoHeat. I’ve actually never been so good and consistent about taking supplements. With ThermoHeat, I’ve been extra good about taking it on a regular basis like a good girl! Why? Because I’m comfortable taking it and it works! (oh yeah, and I have a lost a couple pounds too!)

SO thankful I got to try this product. I definitely give it 2 thumbs up!
