Sexy Body Hideous Soul – Fit Tips to Lookin’ Good Inside & Out!

Funny how much time, thoughts, dreams and energy we spend on (trying to) make our bodies look good naked (or in a wet shirt like this amazingly sculpted fella here – wowzers!). Fellow online BCxer, Nick Collins writes “I care too much about my appearance than I should. Im tired of not looking well enough to feel comfortable without a shirt. I think I’ve been beating myself up so hard that im losing sight of what is important.”

Nick is SOOOOO not alone! Not only do we get the privilege (sarcastic tone here) to see ourselves naked in the mirror (yuck!) and feel all our fat pockets, rolls and folds as we shower (double yuck!), but we also look at ourselves with a very critical eye (down right mean to ourselves). No one else sees that as much as we do. Even romantic nights are dimly lit or under covers (thank goodness!!). Bottom line, WE are in our face all the time.

Ironically, many people (OK, I’m talking about me) work on our bodies so hard so we look good naked, shirtless or in a bikini – but exactly how often are we walking around with no clothes on? Not that much (unless you are a stripper of course). The fact of the matter is, as we shed pounds and get fit, we look better in clothes and we can doll up pretty good. YET, that isn’t enough. It’s never enough sometimes.

Gut Check: So what do we do to balance the scale back toward a healthier view of ourselves? We purposely set aside time to look INSIDE. We can’t run from how we appear on the outside. That will always force itself to the top of your  mind, but if you make time to look at other areas of your life that need improving it balances your focus.

When’s the last time you looked inward and thought “I really need to be more giving” and then made a list of ways you could practice giving to others and actually did it? How about the need to exercise patience, love, grace, thoughtfulness, helpful works, gentleness, kindness and selflessness? I promise you, if we worked on those attributes we’d all be pretty darn HOT! There is nothing uglier (no matter how beautiful they are) than a selfish, greedy, impatient and too-busy-for-anyone-else person.

PHYSICAL EXERCISE OF THE DAY:
Do this exercise slowly and deeply for 30 steps 4 times for AWESOME glutes and shapely legs!

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE OF THE DAY:
(applies whether you are “spiritual” or not so don’t you DARE skip this!)

Whether you believe in the Bible or not, you can’t deny it’s immense wisdom and purity. Even if there was no God, it’s teachings would improve anyone’s life. For instance, one verse says “For bodily exercise profits little: but godliness is profitable to all things” 1 Timothy 4. I bet you didn’t realize people exercised back then! 🙂

What is Godliness? (Stay with me on this one, we’re getting to the good stuff.) Scripture says God is Love and then defines love as: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” 1 Cor 13: 4-7

What does that mean for you?
Godliness means we are using his example, acting “God-like”. If God is patient, God is kind, etc we should be practicing that too.

QUIZ:
Replace the work “love” with your name and find out which traits you need to work on. You’ll know because when you say it, you won’t be able to say it without cringing. I cringe with the first word – because Bonnie is not patient at all. (working on it!)

____________________ does not envy
____________________ does not boast
____________________ is not proud
____________________ is not rude
____________________ is not self-seeking
____________________ always trusts

If we can improve on these areas, we will be healthier and happier – clothed or naked! 🙂
Don’t forget to exercise your body AND your soul!

  1. Love this post! I love your spiritual connection and the fact that you are also so knowledgeable about fitness. What a great reminder to keep working on the inside also. Just like a few weeks ago you encouraged us to not forget to spend time with God. I’ve been getting up at 4:00AM to get in my workouts before work. I also spend time in prayer and my Bible. Your blog was so powerful for me, reminding me to keep what’s important first – not to sacrifice my “looks” for my time with Him. I don’t hit snooze so that both things can happen in the AM. Anyway, keep on blogging! I’m going to keep on reading and most importantly changing!
