Are You Letting Life Interfere with Your Fitness?

Honestly, I just can’t believe how fast time flies by. It’s so easy to start the week with such good intensions to hit the gym or diet hard, etc and “life happens”. Well, it’s more like “we LET life interfere”.

I put off the things I need the most and make time for the things I enjoy doing – which is TOTally backwards. Unlike Nick (@CoackFitNick from twitter) who gets up at 4:45am to do BCx Boot Camp online each morning (ROCKSTAR), I keep pushing my workouts later and later in the day and putting meaningless stuff in front of it.

Meaningless? Nah! OK, so work isn’t meaningless, but there are tasks I do for work that can simply wait – meaning the earth isn’t going to crash down around me if I don’t do them. Business still goes on, yet I get engulfed with emails, tweets, writing articles, designing ads, updating websites, facebooking, etc. and forget to STOP and prioritize each day.

Exercise IS a Priority. Not only SHOULD it be a priority for someone like me (in the fitness business) but it should be a priority for ANYone!  When you are healthy, you are a better worker, a better parent, a more giving friend because you have energy to give, and you’re a more positive and confident person because you actually feel good – inside and out.

If you could take a pill that did all that, you’d take it every day as soon as you got up. Instead, we often put our workouts off like it’s the worst thing we could ever do. Granted, we all do have schedules and some of us don’t have the luxury of choosing the time to workout – but our workouts SHOULD NOT be optional. And yes, they can be HARD – but we KNOW how they make us feel. We KNOW they pay off. However, our pathetic emotions override our knowledge and it takes stopping and recalling that information to tell our emotions they suck and need to get a life. Laziness, Emotions, Blah, Blah, Blah – Bite Me!

So, 7:30pm last night, I finally got workout. I have to laugh at how much better I feel and wonder why in the world we put off things that make us feel so good. The gym and church are two of my favorite places. And I confess right now: I often try to skip them both our of pure laziness!! BUT not one time have I EVER gone and thought “Boy, I wish I didn’t do that”. DUH!! How stupid are we really? I’ll answer that – WE CAN BE REALLY, REALLY  STUPID!!

So I leave you with this thought. Next time you feel like hitting the snooze button or skipping the gym because you are tired, ask yourself this one question, “why would I even consider skipping the one thing that is guaranteed to make me feel and look better? The one thing I NEVER regret?” If you’re honest with yourself, you won’t let yourself miss out on such a great opportunity.

  1. so true! That’s why I get up at 5, run, then get my day started…
my evening workouts are usually just bike ride or whatever else I feel like doing but at least I get my run in first thing 🙂

  2. Excellent article, Bonnie and I can totally relate with you 100%!!! I know how easy it is to get caught up in the same “tasks” you talk about and before you know it, time has flown by.

One thing I have been doing for over 10 years to not miss my workouts is I have been keeping an appointment with myself at the same time for my workout. 11:00 a.m. I schedule a client at 10:00 a.m. and another one at 12:00 p.m. leaving me with that 1 hour open window for me. If I feel like getting in an extra workout, I’ll workout with one of my clients.

Before I got into this industry, I had a day/desk job like most people. I hired a personal trainer and scheduled time with him 3 days a week after work and no matter how tired I may have felt after my work day was over, I had my appointment, and with the help of my trainer, got in a great workout that maximized results in the time I was with him.

Exercise releases endorphins and I ALWAYS feel great after my workouts and regardless of what is going on in my life, everything gets scheduled around my workout time.

There’s no excuse not to exercise and so many fun, affordable ways to fit exercise into your day.
