Blowing Your Diet – Is It Really Worth It?

Why does food have to surround every special occasion centered on women? Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Anniversaries…women are getting wined and dined (which does sound nice by the way), but HELLO, some people are working on reaching some goals that are centered on avoiding high-calorie food like the plague.

MEN, HEAR ME ROAR! Would you celebrate a Holiday with an alcoholic with a toast at a bar? I mean really! There are SO many other wonderful goodies a man can give a woman, yet I deal with women struggling to lose weight who are wined and dined one day and running to the gym, depressed and guilt-ridden, to erase their sins the next.

I know, the intentions are good – BUT, if your family REALLY wants you to succeed, and truly understands how hard you are working to achieve your goal, they’d rethink the celebration.

Don’t get me wrong. You can be healthy and spurge on occasion. No one should deprive themselves of a wonderful meal with loved ones BUT if you are actively trying to lose weight, maybe it’s not the time to splurge – yet.

Put it this way. One day of fine dining, treats and cheating “because it’s a special day” can mean easily consuming 4,000 calories in a single day – and sometimes in just one meal alone. Don’t believe me? Well, I took the liberty to look up a popular restaurant chain and created a sample meal to show you how it can add up.

DINNER AT OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE:
774: Blooming Onion (split by 2)
1336: Filet with While Mushroom with the Blue Cheese Pecan Chop Salad & Garlic Mashed Potatoes
200: 2 Glasses of Wine
477: Chocolate Thunder from Down Under Desert
TOTAL MEAL = 2,787 CALORIES

Even if you think you would have made better choices, there is an additional problem. When we cheat, we tend to continue cheating. As if it’s not just bad enough to screw up on one meal, we tend to dive into a pattern of continuing to splurge until Monday rolls back around. This means, when we blow it on one meal, we often continue to blow it all weekend as if we have a hall pass to eat bad since we already messed up.

Blowing your diet isn’t like taking a day off. Think of it more like breaking the law. It’s all measurable in calories just like breaking the law is measurable in how much time you’ll serve for that crime. There’s no one blanket number given to anyone who messes up. You either mess up small or you mess up big – but either way, you are going to pay for it.

When it comes to calories, You would have to have 13 days of 3-mile calorie power walks or 8 days of one-hour high-intensity aerobics classes to erase that one day of cheating on your diet.

You have to ask yourself, “Is it worth all that work?” I firmly believe this is why American can’t lose weight. They don’t realize the facts: You can work 2 weeks HARD and blow it all in one day if you aren’t careful.

There ‘s no difference between saving money for 2 weeks and blowing it all in 1 hour at the mall. That is exactly how our diet works. It’s so much easier to consume extra calories than it is to work off the calories. Yes, it stinks, but those are the facts and the faster we accept it and quit ignoring them, the better off we’ll be.

Now, if you are depressed because you want to still feel special on those days, and besides going out to dinner and being showered with chocolates, you feel like you’re going to get the shaft – cheer up. There are so many fabulous gifts that could take food’s place- bath and body products, jewelry, clothes, manicure, massage, pedicure, facial, gift cards…the list goes on. One year my father gave my mom a certain amount of dollars for every pound she lost as a gift. I don’t know many women who wouldn’t LOVE that!

YOUR HOMEWORK:

1. If you haven’t told your family what you NEED, then don’t expect them to guess? It is YOUR responsibility to protect your goal by letting the people around you know what you need.

2. If you are actively dieting, you need to count every calorie – even when you are “cheating” so you know exactly how much time you’re going to have to “serve”.

3. Share this information with your friends. People need to know how calories really work and be encouraged to get a grip on it now.

4. Did you blow it? Don’t fret! Forgive yourself and MOVE ON! Start making your plan to erase those calories and realize you are more ahead of the ball game now than before because you “get it”. You read this blog and you realize how you have to handle yourself next time. That is EXTREMELY valuable so shout a victory shout and know you now have the knowledge you need to succeed and make better decisions! Now, let’s go burn off those Mother’s Day calories!! Burn baby BURN!
